Poster sizes for snap-frame signs

Will it blow over?

Weight decides it:

• For an exposed street corner: the Hampton water-base sign (12kg or 22kg) or the heavy wooden A-board (over 20kg).
• For most shop fronts: the 6kg metal A-board.
• The 3kg PVC A-board: best indoors or under cover.

Do you need permission for a pavement sign?

It depends on your council: there is no single national rule.

• Who decides: a sign on the public pavement sits on the highway. Councils decide under section 115E of the Highways Act 1980, and local policies differ. Some need no licence as long as their conditions are met; others ask you to apply for one.
• Common conditions:
  • leave enough pavement clear for pedestrians, wheelchairs and buggies;
  • keep to a maximum size;
  • place the sign directly outside your own premises;
  • bring it in at closing time;
  • never chain it to street furniture.
• Private forecourt: a sign wholly on your own forecourt is generally outside the council's pavement rules.

Check your own council's A-board policy before you put a sign out.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need permission for a pavement sign?

It depends on your local council. There is no single national rule: councils decide under section 115E of the Highways Act 1980. Some allow A-boards without a licence if you follow their conditions; others require one. Typical conditions are keeping the pavement clear, a size limit, placing the sign outside your own premises and taking it in at night. A sign wholly on your own private forecourt is generally outside these rules. Check your council's A-board policy first.

How much does an A-board cost?

From £25.00 + VAT (£30.00 inc VAT) for a wooden chalkboard A-board. Our best-selling metal A-board is £50.00 + VAT (£60.00 inc VAT) as a frame. Every pavement sign ships free to the UK mainland.

Is an A-board the same as an A-frame or a sandwich board?

Yes. A-board, A-frame, sandwich board and pavement board are all names for the same folding sign that stands on the pavement. Ours come in metal, wood, aluminium and PVC, plus water-base signs with a weighted base.

What size is an A-board?

Our metal A-board is 1000 x 650mm, the heavy wooden A-board 1200 x 650mm and the PVC A-board 520 x 800mm. Snap-frame A-boards are sized by the poster they hold: A2, A1 or A0.

Which pavement sign is best for a windy street?

A heavy one. The Hampton water-base sign (12kg for A1, 22kg for A0, with a base you fill with water or sand) or the heavy wooden A-board (over 20kg). The 3kg PVC A-board is best kept indoors or under cover.

Chalkboard, printed or poster frame?

• Chalkboard: change your message every day by hand.
• Printed board: carries a fixed design.
• Snap-frame: lets you swap A2, A1 or A0 posters behind a clear cover in seconds.

Do you deliver pavement signs?
